Do Moisture Generators Really Benefit Indoor Plants?

The Issue
The cold season can be brutal for exotic indoor plants. Central heating turn living rooms into deserts, leaving previously vibrant calatheas with brown, crispy edges. Misting may raise humidity, but the effects are short-lived.

The Hack
An electric humidifier provides a continuous mist to boost humidity around your plants. All you need to fill the reservoir with water and let it run for a few hours a day, so moisture readings resemble the tropics rather than a dry indoor environment.

The Mechanism
Unlike pebble trays or spraying, humidifiers provide reliable, quantifiable results. Plants retain more moisture through their leaves, meaning reduced strain and more energy for growth. Theoretically, it ought to eliminate the notorious dry leaf margin issue completely.

The Test
I tested a compact model beside my calatheas. After two weeks, the difference was visible: no new brown tips, shinier foliage and fresh growth. Downsides? Topping up the water, cleaning to prevent mold, the quiet noise, and electricity use. Cheaper models can break quickly, and bigger units can be pricey.

The Conclusion
For enthusiasts of tropical plants, a moisture generator is a worthwhile purchase. It isn’t essential for hardy species such as snake plants or ZZ plants, but for drama queens such as prayer plants, it can be the difference between struggling to live and flourishing.
